4. Native verbs, で and と

Native verbs take ます directly

Japanese also has its own verbs. They work exactly the same way, but the ending is ます on a stem, not します on a word: 食べ+ます = eat, 飲み+ます = drink, 行き+ます = go, 買い+ます = buy, 見+ます = see.

On the cards: the stem, then ます. Never put します on a native stem, and never put bare ます on a foreign word.

に to go somewhere, で to do something somewhere

行きます (go) is a motion verb. Its destination takes に: 東京に行きます.

When an action happens at a place, the place takes で: レストランで食べます (eat at the restaurant). で is also "by": タクシーで行きます (go by taxi).

と is "with" a person: 友達と行きます.
