Swap the ending, nothing else

Japanese has no irregular past tenses: no sat, stood, ate, drank. Every verb changes the same way, by swapping the ending card.

ます do / will do · ません do not · ました did · ませんでした did not

For します verbs it is the same four: します・しません・しました・しませんでした.

昨日すしを食べました。

(I) ate sushi yesterday.

私はビールを飲みません。

I don't drink beer.

昨日予約をキャンセルしませんでした。

(I) did not cancel the reservation yesterday.

です is · じゃないです is not · でした was · じゃなかったです was not

昨日 (yesterday) goes with past endings; 明日 (tomorrow) goes with the plain ending, which already means "will".

昨日は暇でした。

Yesterday was free (not busy).

これは私のじゃないです。

This is not mine.
