3. Destinations with に

English "to" is always に

Particles are prepositions that come after

English says to Tokyo. Japanese says Tokyo に. Same job, reversed position. Every Japanese particle follows its noun, exactly like は and を did.

に = to. Deliver pizza to me: 私にピザを配達しますか. Email the schedule to Mr. Tanaka: 田中さんにスケジュールをメールします.

私にピザを配達しますか？

Do you deliver pizza to me?

田中さんにスケジュールをメールします。

(I) email the schedule to Mr. Tanaka.

ホテルに電話します。

(I) call the hotel.

Order among the phrases is free

Because each noun carries its own particle, you can say the に phrase and the を phrase in either order. Only two things are fixed: the topic comes first, the verb comes last.

Time words such as 今日 (today) and 明日 (tomorrow) take no particle at all. Put them near the front.

明日田中さんに地図をメールします。

(I) email the map to Mr. Tanaka tomorrow.
